Huawei reduced its lobbying spending in the U.S. by 80% last year

According to opensecrets data cited by Nikkei Asia, due to recent geopolitical changes and the uncertainty of the US market regulatory winds, Chinese technology companies’ lobbying spending in the United States increased significantly last year.

TikTok's parent company ByteDance spent $2.61 million on lobbying in the United States last year, a tenfold increase from the previous year. Former US President Trump once ordered the ban on "US version of Douyin". In response, ByteDance hired 47 lobbyists last year to influence the decision-making of the US Congress, an increase of 30 from 2019.

In addition, Alibaba Group spent US$3.16 million, an increase of about 20% over 2019. Tencent only officially launched a lobbying program in the United States last year and spent about US$1.52 million.

At the same time, Huawei's lobbying funds in the United States have been reduced by about 80%.

Facebook's spending increased by 18% in 2020, reaching 19.68 million US dollars, jumping to the top of the lobbying spending list for the first time. The champion of lobbying spending in 2019 is Amazon. In 2020, it will increase by 12% on the original basis to reach 18.72 million US dollars, second only to Facebook.

The four major US Internet giants, including Google’s parent company Alphabet and Apple, spent a total of $53.9 million, a slight increase over the previous year.

As US congressmen’s antitrust investigations on technology companies become more stringent, and Internet giants spend more and more on lobbying, after Biden came to power, the relationship between Amazon and the White House seems to have improved.
