Analyst: The supply of panel driver IC affects the release schedule of the iPhone 12 Pro series

According to display analyst Ross Young, Apple may delay the release of the iPhone 12 Pro series or completely cancel the 120Hz feature in order to launch it as scheduled due to the supply of panel driver ICs with a 120Hz refresh rate.

Ross Young’s information pointed out that although Apple can obtain a 120Hz panel, it does not include a 120Hz driver IC, so there are supply chain issues. Apple must think about a set of solutions from this, choose to wait for the 120Hz driver IC to arrive and delay the launch of the new machine, or choose the new machine with a 60Hz panel to launch as scheduled.

Ross Young speculated that it may be because the 120Hz refresh rate was not part of the original plan of the iPhone 12 Pro series, which caused Apple to face supply chain problems later. According to his follow-up understanding, Apple is expected to manufacture 60-96Hz driver ICs and adjust the screen refresh rate to 25% to reach the 120Hz level.

In addition, the whistleblower Jon Prosser also revealed the specifications of the new iPhone, saying that the two screenshots he uploaded were from the PVT (Production Verification Test) version of the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

In the first screenshot, there are multiple iPhone 12 Pro Max "settings" new switching options, such as using the iPhone 12 Pro Max's LiDAR scanner to improve image quality, allowing users to enable LiDAR assistance, when Auto focus and subject detection in video recording or "night" mode. It can even enable 4K@120FPS or 4K@240FPS to record slow motion, as well as enhanced night mode and advanced noise reduction.

The second screenshot is about the screen refresh rate. One option is to allow 120Hz, and the other is to allow the phone to automatically adjust between 120Hz and 60Hz according to the screen content. This screenshot shows that at least Apple has tested this feature.

However, it should be noted that these screenshots are from the PVT version, which also means that there is still the possibility of changing or canceling functions before the official release of the new iPhone 12 series.
