If the 5–28V illumination supply is connected backward, the LED will fail immediately and the switch contact circuits may also be damaged depending on the internal wiring topology. There is no current-limiting series resistor or diode inside the switch to protect against this error. You must implement reverse-polarity protection externally using a series diode rated for the illumination current (minimum 100mA forward rating) or a dedicated reverse-polarity protection IC in your control circuit. This is a design requirement, not an optional safeguard.
