SK Hynix, the world's second-largest memory chip manufacturer, is increasing its investment in overseas start-up companies.
BusinessKorea pointed out that SK Hynix has invested in potential business opportunities in multiple fields, including semiconductor chip design, EUV lithography process, materials to software development and autonomous vehicle sensors.
In August last year, companies such as SK Hynix and Saudi Aramco invested an additional US$60 million in SiFive. It is understood that SiFive provides free RISC-V with independent property rights in an attempt to break Arm's monopoly in the market.
In May last year, SK Hynix invested in MemVerge, a large-scale storage computing developer. The company's technology can overcome the limitations of storage computing and provide faster data processing speeds for the artificial intelligence (AI) industry.
In addition, SK Hynix invested about 1.2 billion won in the US start-up company Inpria in August 2019, which mainly produces photoresist materials used in the EUV process. Beginning in the second half of this year, SK Hynix will begin to apply EUV lithography technology to produce DRAM.
